Yesterday (19 Mar) was the competition for N872 (Original Composition) of the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. The competition process is carried out as such: before the competition day the two adjudicators review and assess submitted scores, and determine marks and prizes. The competition day consists of an evening “lecture” in which the adjudicators go through their comments on the works one by one. The soundtracks submitted by competitors are also played.
The adjudicators last evening were CHAN Hing-yan (professor at HKU Music) and TANG Lok-yin. With my Rising Sun for woodwind quintet, I got 86 marks, which I consider quite a good result, although without prizes. With regard to comments, I found it interesting how Prof. Chan compared my music to a “vegetarian” dish – perhaps I have got too used to write music in a “conventional” manner.
